A civil action targeting former Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams over a series of IRA bombings in Britain has been dropped.

Lawyers for the people bringing the claim told the court on Friday that they were discontinuing the case, effectively ending the civil proceedings.

The claim had accused Adams of being legally responsible for injuries suffered in three attacks linked to the IRA, dating from 1973 and 1996, in London and Manchester. Adams, 77, has consistently denied any involvement in those incidents and rejected assertions that he was a senior figure in the IRA.

The move closes this particular civil route of accountability; there was no criminal trial in connection with these claims.

Further details may emerge as legal teams comment.
