Crown Princess Mette-Marit has spoken publicly for the first time since revelations about her ties to Jeffrey Epstein, saying she feels she was misled and expressing regret over the association.

In a 20-minute interview with national broadcaster NRK, the 52-year-old royal said she wishes she had never met Epstein and apologised for not checking his background more carefully.

She became emotional several times while discussing the matter. Documents released by US authorities showed she exchanged hundreds of emails with Epstein between 2011 and 2014 and stayed at his Florida home on an occasion when he was not present.

The disclosures sparked intense scrutiny and public pressure for an explanation.

Mette-Marit said she did not know Epstein was a convicted sex offender or predator at the time and described herself as overly trusting. When reminded that information about his conviction was publicly available online, she said she could not recall checking it 15 years ago.

She told NRK that Epstein had been introduced to her through a mutual friend and that an incident during a stay at his Palm Beach property left her feeling uncomfortable.

She declined to provide details beyond saying she contacted her husband about the episode and later cut off direct contact with Epstein. The princess emphasised that victims of Epstein's crimes deserve justice and said she is angry that many have not received it.

She has previously apologised and acknowledged poor judgement in maintaining the relationship.

The interview was recorded on the final day of her son Marius Borg Høiby’s rape trial, which began in early February after the Epstein files emerged; a verdict is expected in June. Observers noted she delayed speaking publicly until the trial concluded.

Asked about her future role, Mette-Marit said her ability to continue royal duties depends on her health.

She lives with pulmonary fibrosis and said that condition will determine whether she can fulfil the responsibilities of her position. Crown Prince Haakon, who joined her in the interview, stressed their unity after more than 25 years of marriage.

The revelations prompted questions from political leaders and the public, and the crown princess faces ongoing scrutiny as investigators and the media continue to examine the extent of her interactions with Epstein.
