The team behind Gardeners’ World has shared an emotional update about Monty Don’s beloved dog Ned — just months after the presenter was left heartbroken by another devastating loss. In a collaborative post between the show’s official account and Monty Don, the BBC favourite paid tribute to Ned in a short but heartfelt message that quickly struck a chord with fans. The post read: “Oh, Ned, we do love you! Ned’s always providing the Gardeners’ World crew with lots of cuteness when we’re filming with Monty at Longmeadow”.
It was shared alongside a light-hearted video of the golden retriever attempting to grab a toy perched on a wheelbarrow—a moment that captured the playful personality viewers have come to adore. Fans were quick to flood the comments with support, reflecting the bond they have built not just with Monty but also with his dogs.
One wrote: “Monty and Ned, the dynamic duo. Brings such joy to my week.” Another added: “We love sweet Ned! Such a good boy!” A third commented: “Gorgeous Ned he is a joy to watch”.
The touching post comes in the wake of a far sadder chapter for Monty, 70, who announced in January that his beloved dog Peggy had died. Sharing the news at the time, Monty revealed the quiet and dignified way she passed, writing: “Peggy died yesterday. She was an old lady - a few weeks short of her 16th birthday- and went as she had lived, gently and without fuss”.
He continued with a deeply personal tribute: “She was eccentric, quirky, infinitely gentle and loving and will be missed terribly.” Monty also confirmed Peggy had been laid to rest at his home, adding: “She is now buried in the coppice alongside Nigel and Nell and the other dogs.”
The announcement prompted an outpouring of sympathy from fans, many of whom shared their own experiences of losing pets. One supporter wrote: “I am so sorry, Monty. Dogs are such a special part of our lives.” Another added: “So sorry to hear Monty, she will be so missed. Thinking of you.”
The team behind Gardeners’ World magazine also shared their condolences, writing: “So sorry for your loss.” A third shared: “Dogs are part of the family, so I know how much this will hurt. She had a long and happy life, so that should be a comfort.”
Monty’s dogs have long been a beloved part of the programme, regularly appearing alongside him as he tends to his Longmeadow garden. Over the years, viewers have also mourned the loss of his other dogs, including Nigel, who died in 2020 after suddenly falling ill, and Nellie, who passed away in 2023.
Paying tribute to Nellie at the time, Monty said he chose to remember her “not with sadness but gratitude for the way she enriched my life”.
