A coroner has determined that a beloved comedian and performer who achieved nationwide recognition on Britain's Got Talent took his own life. Martyn Crofts, recognised by millions as 'The Pan Man', was discovered in Whinny Gill Reservoir in Skipton on December 17, 2024 - a day following being reported missing.
Throughout the hearing conducted earlier this week, Senior North Yorkshire Coroner Jon Heath recorded a conclusion of suicide, identifying the cause of death as drowning. The official Record of Inquest confirmed that 55-year-old Mr Crofts, who was born in Taunton in 1969, was already dead when his body was retrieved from the water. Mr Crofts had resided in Skipton with his wife, Deborah, and was a familiar face in the local area long before his television breakthrough, reports the Manchester Evening News.
He became a recognisable name in 2012 after his unforgettable appearance on the sixth series of the ITV talent programme. His distinctive performance, which featured singing while using a metal pan to mimic a Dalek from Doctor Who, delighted judges Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon and propelled him through to the live semi-finals.
Away from the TV spotlight, he was a fixture of local entertainment, regularly performing at the Skipton Gala. Tributes from mates and co-workers emphasised his "bubbly" character and his commitment to spreading happiness to others, particularly during the solitude of the 2020 lockdowns when he entertained residents at Craven Nursing Home in the town.
Since his death, the Skipton community has been expressive in their fondness for the man many acknowledged with "putting the town on the map". Friends and ex-colleagues depicted him as a genuine, "beautiful man" who always made time for a chat.
One touching tribute from a mate highlighted the long-term nature of his personal struggles, expressing they hoped he had finally discovered the peace he had battled to find for a lengthy period.
Others remembered him as a "kind soul" whose absence would be noticed by a "huge amount of people" across North Yorkshire.
