TV vet Dr Scott is currently on a mission to stop preventable heartbreak among pet owners. The Aussie star, who often features on ITV's This Morning, is working with Birmingham Dogs Home as he shared an important message to those with cats and dogs.

This month is National Pet Vaccination month and Dr Scott says it is of utmost importance for pet owners to take notice. He exclusively told Express.co.uk: "We have seen this huge drop in the amount of vaccinations being given to our pets. There are 72% of cats and 42% of dogs that aren't vaccinated meaning that, in the UK currently, there is a resurgence of things that we can prevent. I think one of the issues there is the misunderstanding that puppy and kitten vaccinations are for life - but they're not. Some only last for a year. It's so important that people are reminded of that.

"Getting regular vaccinations also gives us the opportunity to examine your pet every year, which is really important, especially when you think that they age about seven times faster than us. So it's like seeing your doctor once every seven years!"

He added: "I think 99% of vets have seen animals die from preventable diseases. If they get ill from something that you could have prevented that's like double heartbreak."

Birmingham Dogs Home supports over 2000 dogs a year from all over the West Midlands, they receive no Government funding and rely solely on the generosity of local communities and dog lovers who support, engage, and donate to help the cause.

You can support Birmingham Dogs Home by sponsoring a kennel, fundraising, or making a direct donation on the website. If you would like to visit any of the dogs in its care you can find opening times for respective centres on the website www.birminghamdogshome.org.uk.

The charity has dogs of all ages, breeds and all have their unique personalities. If you’re looking to rehome a dog, please be patient, work with the team; and a dog which will fit your lifestyle will come through the doors.

Dr Scott says that Birmingham Dogs Home, which he is an ambassador for, is run by an "amazing group of people." He added: "The approach they take to finding their cats and dogs new homes is exemplary."
