Mary, 90, was a judge on Bake Off between 2010 and 2016, and was a fan favourite until her exit when she was replaced by now fellow former judge Prue Leith.
In her long career Mary has entranced and entertained the nation with her baking and cooking tips and skills.
However, she has now turned her hand to gardening at her new home that she shares with her husband Paul. Six years ago the pair moved from their larger home in Buckinghamshire to a smaller property in Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire.
Whilst the size of their living situation changed, the new garden meant a whole new adventure.
Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph, Mary explained that the former owners of their current home hadn’t been massive gardeners.
Explaining why this was a positive, Mary said: “The people who lived here before us weren't huge gardeners, which I quite liked because it meant I had a clean slate to start all over again.
“However, they were keen tennis players and had a court at the back, which is lovely, but I didn't want to look at it every time I went out. So, we planted a row of four-foot yews in front of it.”
Mary’s latest book, titled ‘My Gardening Life’, contains Mary’s insights from her gardens and is dedicated to Mary’s gardener Kevin Pryce, a man Mary says is still her gardener after 32 years.
Whilst Mary has talked about her garden, she has also talked about her own health. The national treasure told Saga magazine about her own mother who lived to the age of 105, something that she says gives her hope.
She said: “My mother was 105 when she died, so I’ve got pretty good genes. I’m immensely grateful for that.”
As well as keeping up a regular fitness routine, Mary admitted that she “swears by” a glass of wine daily. She added: “Oh yes. The glass has become slightly bigger. I don’t drink until the evening, and then one glass of white will last me.”
