Jeremy Vine is one of Britain’s most recognisable broadcasters. But behind the familiar voice heard across radio and television lies a life shaped by heartbreak, controversy and even chilling threats. The BBC and Channel 5 presenter has spent decades in the public eye — navigating a rocky first marriage, frightening confrontations on the street and a relentless campaign of online harassment that eventually landed one man in prison. The presenter was previously married to American banker Janelle Muntz, but the relationship eventually broke down after seven years together.
The couple separated in 2000, with Vine later admitting the split had been painful. Two years later, he found love again with fellow journalist Rachel Schofield. The pair tied the knot on 14 September 2002 in Tipton St John, Devon. Today the couple live in Chiswick, west London, with their two daughters, born in 2004 and 2006. Away from the studio, Vine has long been open about his Christian faith. He is a practising Anglican and regularly attends church. But life in the spotlight has also brought frightening moments.
In August 2016 Vine found himself at the centre of a shocking road rage incident while cycling through London.
A driver threatened and verbally abused the presenter during the confrontation — which Vine captured on his helmet camera before later uploading the footage online.
The incident ended up in court. In April 2017 the driver was jailed for one month for threatening behaviour, driving without reasonable consideration for other road users and driving without valid road tax.
Because she had already been serving a suspended sentence for other offences, a further eight months were added — bringing the total jail term to nine months.
However, some of the most unsettling moments in his life came years later during the pandemic. In October 2021 anti-vaccine campaigners staged a protest outside Vine’s home, objecting to the BBC’s coverage of Covid vaccines.
Just months later he suffered a nasty accident while cycling. In February 2022 Vine was “knocked out cold for a minute or two” after falling around eight feet from his penny-farthing bicycle onto grass.
He was rushed to Charing Cross Hospital where doctors told him he was fortunate to escape with only a black eye and aches. But the most disturbing episode involved a relentless online harassment campaign.
In August 2022 former BBC Radio Leeds presenter Alex Belfield was convicted at Nottingham Crown Court of stalking Vine and three others.
Describing the abuse, Vine told the court he had been subjected to an “avalanche of hatred” and a “constant bombardment” of harassing tweets and YouTube videos.
The presenter told the court he feared Belfield or one of his followers could turn up at his home, prompting him to display a photograph of Belfield so his family would recognise him.
Belfield was eventually sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison. More recently Vine secured another legal victory.
In May 2024 the High Court ruled in his favour after he sued former footballer Joey Barton for libel over social media posts.
Eleven of the 14 tweets cited in the case were found to be defamatory after Barton repeatedly labelled Vine a “bike nonce”, a vulgar slur falsely linking him to paedophilia.
