Former Top Gear stars Jeremy Clarkson and James May have got themselves into a rather public spat. The pair got into a disagreement over the Supermarine Spitfire with differing thoughts on the British single-seat fighter aircraft.

Posting to X, formerly Twitter, James, 63, applauded the flying vehicle. He said: "Today marks the 90th anniversary of the Supermarine Spitfire being less important than the Hawker Hurricane in winning the Battle of Britain and securing humanity’s future. Repeat please." But Jeremy was quick to dampen his spirits as he commented: "We have discussed this many times and we have agreed many times that you are wrong on this issue." James quickly hit back, writing: "I’ve never agreed anything of the sort," which sparked a debate amongst their many fans and followers.

One fan joked: "I sense a TV special in the making," as another echoed: "Maybe you two will settle this dispute publicly, best on TV in cars for 700 pounds in Georgia while sipping wine?"

One more suggested: "You should have a race to settle this! (Oh that’s NEVER been done…). Mr. May, of course, would require an Armstrong Siddeley Hurricane and Mr. Clarkson a Triumph Spitfire…"

"Please host this in person debate on your YouTube channel. I promise the internet will be thankful," another person said.

He joked that it was a stubborn move by his co-star. The 63-year-old car fanatic appeared on ITV's Lorraine where host Christine Lampard asked him about why his friend and colleague had said he is not welcome in his establishment.

The programme showed a picture from inside the pub of a sign that showed a list of banned people. It included only two names - Sir Keir Starmer and James May.

Christine asked: "Is it true that you have been banned from Jeremy Clarkson's pub?" May replied: "Well, apparently. But I have said before that it's a bit like being banned from the golf club - because I wasn't going to go anyway."

The ITV host burst out laughing as May elaborated: "I've got my own pub, which is just around the corner so I'm not going to go 75 miles to his. Especially if mine is better."
