Residents of Tehran have told the BBC that Thursday night saw the heaviest wave of strikes on the capital since Israel and the US launched their attack on Iran six days ago.

"The house was shaking for five minutes straight. Last night was the worst night," says a man in his 30s.

He says he could barely sleep because of the "constant explosions."

Another woman in her 40s said she "woke up to the sound of explosions at 05:00 and haven't been able to sleep ever since".

The BBC is withholding the identities of those we speak to for their own safety.

International news organisations are often refused visas to Iran, which severely limits their ability to gather information about what's going on inside the country. Internet blackouts make the situation even harder to report on.

Another young man has described the fear he and his family have felt in recent days in Damavand, a city near Tehran where they have moved to temporarily.

"I'd never seen an explosion up close before," he said.

"I actually saw it with my own eyes from inside the house. I saw a light suddenly shoot up into the sky. All the windows in the house started shaking. My family was so frightened you wouldn't believe it.

"They said we'd have to go with two cars, because one car wouldn't be enough to take our things."

"I can see a lot of dissatisfaction with the war among ordinary people," he added.

BBC News is unable to verify casualty counts from inside Iran, but US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (Hrana) has reported 1,168 civilians have been killed since the war began, including 194 children.

'Just keep hitting'

"They were hitting so hard that all the windows were shaking," said another young woman in Tehran. "It sounded as if a dragon was making noises."

But she said that she sensed support among some of her fellow citizens for the ongoing US-Israel attack.

"Honestly, how can I put it - people are almost excited," she told BBC Persian.

"People go up on to their rooftops. They sit there waiting for the strikes to happen. The eighth and ninth of January [when anti-government protests were violently suppressed] were much scarier for them than this past week. Back then, we ourselves were the targets of the bullets."

"When fighter jets pass overhead, people wave goodbye to them and whistle," she said."

"The city has become very quiet and empty, though, but people say: 'Just keep hitting until it's finished by Nowruz [Persian New Year, 20 March].'

"They say they simply can't tolerate the Islamic Republic anymore."

'The city has turned into a ghost town'

But some Iranians are worried about what might happen afterwards.

"We mustn't end up like Iraq or Syria, honestly, we don't deserve that," a young man in Tehran said, referring to the civil wars which scarred those two countries this century.

He said supporters of the regime were also cheering it on.

"Every few crossroads there's a checkpoint. A few [pro-government] people gather and start chanting slogans, then a car with loudspeakers comes along blasting more slogans.

"The city has turned into a ghost town, the smell of gunpowder, everything closed, darkness everywhere."

"I hope things change - people live on hope," he added.

"But if it doesn't happen this time, then it probably never will."
