Police have provided an update on the health of Soham killer Ian Huntley after a prison attack left him in a critical condition. Huntley is serving a life sentence for the murders of 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Cambridgeshire, in August 2002 – a case that triggered one of the biggest manhunts in British history.
At the time, Ian Huntley worked as a school caretaker and even gave TV interviews during the two-week search for the girls, claiming he had been one of the last people to see them alive. Police later discovered he had lured the two schoolgirls to his home before murdering them and disposing of their bodies. Last week, the 52-year-old was seriously injured after being attacked inside HM Prison Frankland. He was taken to hospital following the incident.
He was reportedly struck several times over the head with a makeshift weapon before being rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said there had been no change in the 52-year-old's condition overnight and confirmed he remains in hospital in a serious condition.
