
Mastermind presenter Clive Myrie paid tribute to a beloved a colleague and friend. Tributes have been paid to the war photographer Paul Conroy who has died at the age of 61. The Liverpool-born photographer died from a heart attack on Saturday in Devon, where he had lived, his brother Alan told the BBC. "He did all his life what he wanted to do to make a difference - he found great pleasure in exposing wrongs," Alan added. The freelance journalist covered conflicts around the world and was wounded in the Syrian army's bombardment of Homs, which killed his Sunday Times colleague Marie Colvin in 2012. Their fateful assignment was depicted in the 2018 movie A Private War, with the actor Jamie Dornan playing Conroy.
Clive was flooded with support on social media as the News at Ten presenter confessed he was "utterly devastated" by the tragic news. Taking to X on Sunday he penned a heartbreaking tribute in view of his 222,000 followers.
The broadcaster wrote: "I’m utterly devastated by the news that Paul Conroy has died. A wonderful photojournalist and a wonderful human being. I counted him as a friend and a decent, principled and kind man. My brutha you will be sorely missed. RIP @reflextv."
Social media users flocked to comment on the post as they offered their condolences.
One wrote: "Such a kind, funny and honourable man. So much more yet to give."
Another commented: "I cannot stop thinking about this news - admired him for so long."
"It is so sad. A legend & a very brave hero bearing true witness in the most dangerous places. RIP," a third penned.
A fourth added: "Absolutely tragic news, he was an inspiration."
Lindsey Hilsum, Channel 4 News International Editor, said on X that Conroy was visiting family in Devon at the time of his death. "All of us who knew and loved him are devastated,” she added.
Conroy, from Totnes, Devon, had continued working after recovering from the 2012 attack and turned his attention to Ukraine following the Russian invasion in 2022.
Syrian journalist Fared Al Mahlool said: "I am heartbroken to share the devastating news of the death of my dear friend, Paul Conroy. Paul died of a heart attack. He did not hesitate. He faced his final moments with courage and dignity.
"He died a hero - selfless, fearless, and deeply human. My heart is shattered. Rest in peace, Paul. You will never be forgotten."
Conroy co-wrote a song with Joss Stone in support of Amnesty International after the pair met when the singer made a documentary at the age of 15. War footage he filmed was used in the single’s video.
Writing on Facebook, she said: "I wouldn’t be the person I am today with out Paul.
"Paul Conroy was a legend. A wonderful person through and through. Always standing up for what was right. Always there for those in need."
Conroy is survived by his wife, three sons and grandchildren.
