Pioneering DJ Garrick L. Slade, who performed under the moniker DJ I Rock Jesus, has died at the age of 61. His high school sweetheart wife Renee predeceased him in 2009 following a battle with cancer. No cause of death has been revealed, but in an Instagram post on February 11, the star cancelled his Morning Coffee Mix radio show explaining he was "under the weather" and needed "a little more time to rest and recover". His final post on the social media site was the following day on February 12 when he said the show would be back and thanked people for their prayers.
His family confirmed the news of his death as they set up a GoFundMe to "give him the send off he deserves". His niece Nicole Elliot took to the fundraising site to pay tribute and explain how the money would be used. "My uncle, djirockjesus, passed away this morning. He was more than just a DJ; he was a beloved member of our community who brought people together through his music and his generous spirit. Whether he was performing at local events or reaching out to others through his ministry, djirockjesus always found ways to lift people up and share his love for music," she wrote.
