Ian Huntley is fighting for his life this morning after being battered in an attack in jail. The 52-year-old Soham murderer is understood to have been seriously injured by another inmate on his prison wing before being airlifted to hospital.

The assault reportedly took place at HMP Frankland in County Durham at around 9am, with emergency services called to the scene. He was reported to have been left lying in a pool of blood on his prison wing after he was targeted by another inmate at around 9am. His condtion was described as "touch and go." A prison source said the wing was placed on lockdown following the incident as officers responded to the attack. It is understood Huntley was discovered with serious injuries and required urgent medical treatment before being taken from the prison under escort. Huntley is serving a life sentence for the 2002 murders of 10-year-old schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambridgeshire. He was convicted in 2003 after luring the children to his home before killing them and disposing of their bodies in a ditch near an airbase.
