President Donald Trump has sparked fresh concerns about his mental sharpness after a rambling White House speech veered wildly off course, leaving critics branding it “off the rails”. The moment came during a remembrance ceremony for “angel families”, relatives of people killed by undocumented migrants. Trump signed a declaration designating February 22^nd as Angel Family Day before addressing the families, many of whom he personally honoured and invited to share their stories.

But as the speech progressed, Trump repeatedly jumped between unrelated topics, prompting some viewers to question his stability. While outlining his push for voter ID laws, Trump suddenly digressed, saying: “What? Why would we do this? And they walk in? Nobody even ask for like, do you have an identification? Do you have an ID? It’s so crazy.” He then pivoted to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his request that snow shovel workers show ID and bring paperwork in order to get a job. “You know the mayor of New York and he’s a very nice person. I met him but his ideologies. Not too good,” Trump said.

He continued: “But we’re having a massive snowstorm right now and I’ve heard that he’s asked people to come out and help shovel the snow.

Mid-sentence, Trump abruptly stopped and addressed a woman in the audience.

“Hello darling how are you? Look my friend right are you okay? Yes, you are? You okay? Are you okay? Good. Are your eyes okay?” he asked, derailing the event further.

He then launched into a detailed aside about paying for her medical care.

“I gave her money to get her eyes fixed — a lot of money to get her eyes fixed! That doctor ripped me off, but that’s okay!” Trump said, drawing laughter from the room.

Continuing, he added: “It’s an operation but it’s 100% good. Are you gonna have 20/20 vision? She’s almost blind — cataracts — she’s almost blind and with one operation that will take a very short period of time… I hope you have a good doctor.

"He’s an expensive doctor, top of the line right, but you know what you’re gonna have 20/20 vision.”

Trump eventually steeredback to the event’s purpose, telling her: “But you know speaking of your family — it would be a lot different right now except for the election so I always say it’s too bad that happened.”

In one bizarre moment, he also said: "I don't know how long I'll be around. I've got a lot of people gunning for me, don't I?"

The woman was later identified as Patty Morin, a member of an angel family whose daughter was brutally murdered by an illegal immigrant. Reaction online was swift and divided.

One viewer wrote on X: “Trump’s brain flits wildly from Mamdani to shoveling snow to having a conversation with a woman in the audience who has bad eyes. He claims he ‘gave her a lot of money to get her eyes fixed.’ This event is totally off the rails.”

Another added: “He has dementia.” But supporters quickly pushed back, accusing critics of bad faith.

One defender wrote: “Liberals call it incoherence, and we call it connecting with the people. When Trump pays for eye treatments for ordinary people out of his own pocket, the mainstream media pretends not to notice.”

They added: “This is our leader, the one who tames Mamdani and loves ordinary Americans.”
