Dana Eden has died aged 52. Eden, the creator and producer of the Apple TV thriller series Tehran, was discovered in a hotel room in Greece by her brother after failing to respond to his messages.
The TV star was in Athens as filming for the fourth season of the Israeli drama series was underway. An autopsy will be conducted to confirm Eden's cause of death, but it is believed there was no evidence of foul play.
Local police have started collecting security camera footage and statements from hotel staff.
A tribute was shared by Tehran’s production company Dana & Shula Productions, saying they were "shocked" by the loss of the "gifted creator".
"We are shocked and saddened by the untimely passing of our beloved friend and partner," the statement said. "Dana, a gifted creator with an international reputation, worked in the industry for more than 30 years, and for the past 18 years at Dana and Shula Productions won numerous awards, including an International Emmy for producing the international series 'Tehran.'"
The production company insisted there was no evidence of foul play, after rumours on social media claimed Eden may have been killed by Iranian agents.
"The production company wants to make it clear that the rumors of the death being criminal or nationalistic are not true and baseless," they added.
"We call on the media and the public not to publish unfounded theories and to act with responsibility and sensitivity. This is a moment of immense pain for the family, friends, and colleagues. We want to preserve Dana’s dignity and her privacy."
Tehran, written and created by Eden, Moshe Zonder, and Maor Kohn, premiered in 2020 and went on to win an International Emmy Award the following year.
The series follows a Mossad hacker-agent who infiltrates Tehran under a false identity to help destroy Iran's nuclear reactor. However, when she becomes trapped in her new life, she is forced to plan an operation that will place her loved ones in jeopardy.
"It gives hope for the future, that Israelis and Iranians will be able to walk together in Jerusalem and in Tehran as friends — and not as enemies," Eden said in her acceptance speech.
Glenn Close and Hugh Laurie joined the cast in season two and three respectively.
Eden's father, Yoram Levy, founded Dana Productions when she was just one. She studied at the Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts before joining Dana Productions in 1996.
Eden produced her first series, Chalomot Ne'urim, the following year before permanently taking over management of the company when her father was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
Her other TV producer credits include Mary Lou, Not in Front of the Kids, Mother’s Day, Shakshouka, Michael, Magpie, She Has It and others.
Paying tribute to Eden in a statement, The Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation said: "We mourn the passing of our colleague and partner in a long line of productions, series, and programs at the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation – Dana Eden.
"Dana was among the senior figures in Israel’s television industry and played a central role in creating and leading some of the corporation’s most prominent and influential productions. Her professional and personal legacy will continue to shape Israeli television for many years to come."
