Polish actress Bożena Dykiel has sadly died at the age of 77, it has been confirmed. Father Andrzej Luter confirmed the news with a short statement, which announced: “Bożena Dykiel – a vibrant actress – has died.” The news was confirmed by film industry website filmpolski.pl.

Born in Warsaw, Dykiel was best known for starring in Polish-language films including Day of the Wacko, The War of the Worlds: Next Century and 2013’s In Hiding. Dykiel was also known for starring as Maria Zięba in Polish soap opera Na Wspólnej, appearing in more than 1,370 episodes.

Deputy culture minister Maciej Wróbel branded her death an “irreparable loss” to Polish cinema, with a statement that read: “It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of the outstanding actress Bożena Dykiel.

“Her extraordinary talent and charisma have permanently etched their place in the history of Polish theatre, cinema, and television.

“Bożena Dykiel was one of the most recognisable and beloved figures on the Polish acting scene. She debuted in film and theatre in the 1970s, and her roles, both dramatic and comedic, were long remembered by audiences.

“From Alternative 4 to The Wedding, The Promised Land, and Balladyna, among many other roles, they have become part of the iconic legacy of Polish culture.

“In recognition of her lifetime artistic achievements, the actress was awarded the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis. We extend our deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, and all who appreciated her work.”

Dykiel was a master of the theatre, and rode onto the stage for Balladyna at the Warsaw National Theatre on a motorbike in a stunning moment which is still remembered today.
