A spokesperson for National Highways North West confirmed the closure in an online statement.
"The M6 in Lancashire is CLOSED northbound between J32 (M55) and J33 (Galgate) due to a serious collision involving two cars," the spokesperson said.
"Emergency services are in attendance."
National Highways also thanked any drivers hamstrung by the resulting motorway mayhem for their "patience" as the closure remains in place.
There is currently with no estimate for when the lanes will reopen to traffic.
