Brits are almost as likely to buy Valentine’s Day gifts for their pets as their partner, according to new research.
Nearly half us (48%) are considering getting a gift for our furry friend, compared to 56% doing the same for their other half.
The trend is being driven by younger Brits with 18 to 24 year olds twice as likely to buy their pet a gift as those aged 45 to 55, according to the survey by Monopoly GO!
But not all animals are so fortunate. The mobile game company has partnered with the RSPCA to shine a light on animals great and small who are looking for a little love this Valentine’s Day.
And while we’re undoubtedly a nation of animal lovers, the research revealed that we don’t always understand all our rescue pet’s needs.
Around 69% believed the main requirements were food, warmth and shelter with just 22% recognising play as a critical part of animal rehabilitation - despite 82% of people recognising that fun was essential for their own wellbeing.
Monopoly GO! has teamed up with Mark Wright to show just how crucial games and fun can have in supporting animal wellbeing. The animal-loving TV and radio host will be spotlighting the work of the RSPCA through new feel-good series Pawsome News.
“Pets have always been a huge part of my life, so getting involved with this project with Monopoly GO! and RSPCA has been really special,” he said.
“People don’t always realise just how powerful play is for pets that have had a tough start. Having fun is key for all of our wellbeing and hosting Pawsome News has definitely given me a lot of that.”
One of the playful pets currently in the care of the RSPCA is Iris the football fanatic rabbit, who plays with her ball at the charity’s Ashley Heath Centre, in Dorset. Meanwhile Cleo the Staffy is known to get fur flying during tug–of-war bouts in the Cotswolds.
Lauren Bennett, scientific and policy officer at RSPCA, said: “Play is so much more than just fun, it’s a vital part of helping many animals to exhibit natural behaviours, build trust and get ready for their forever homes.
“Whether it's a dog learning to play fetch again, a cat gaining confidence through games that let them pounce and chase, or chickens being given the chance to forage and peck, play supports both physical and emotional welfare.”
Monopoly GO! has launched Pets Season featuring a pet-themed sticker album, new boards, new characters, and mini-games for animal lovers to enjoy.
Sophie Young, VP of regional marketing said: “At Monopoly GO! play sits at the heart of everything we do.
“Our partnership with the RSPCA allows us to extend that idea beyond the game to highlight how everyday moments of play can support animals on their journey to recovery and rehoming, with Pets Season giving our community a meaningful way to be part of that.”
