The Met Office has issued new yellow weather warnings for parts of the UK as heavy rain is expected. Wet weather is continuing to batter the UK this weekend, with areas in Scotland set for such a severe downpour the Met Office has issued an urgent warning, advising households to get an emergency kit at the ready.
The alert was issued on Saturday morning and covers areas in Central Scotland, Tayside and Fire, as well as Grampian until Sunday morning. Warning locals, the agency said that “intense showers” are expected to begin at 10pm on February 7, with 11 hours of relentless rain expected to fall until 9am the following morning.
A Met Office forecast said: "Further rain will fall over eastern Scotland onto already saturated ground which may cause further disruption and localised flooding. 10-15mm of rain is likely to fall quite widely with 25-30mm over higher ground.
“This rainfall will combine with melting of lying snow which will further add to the flood risk and saturation of the ground."
People hit by the torrential rain can expect disruption to trains and bus services, while motorists should also take care as widespread spray and flooding are likely to make journeys more difficult.
Due to the seriousness of the downpours, the forecasters have advised people to be prepared and take action in case of an emergency.
Firstly, they suggest checking your risk of flooding and creating a flood plan and kit if deep waters take over your home.
Next they suggest preparing for power cuts, getting torches, batteries, power packs and other essential items at the ready.
Finally they suggest checking any travel plans. They added: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, and amending your travel plans if necessary.”
