Rock sensation Chuck Negron has sadly died at the age of 83, surrounded by his family, as tributes flood in online. The singer-songwriter, who founded the rock band The Three Dog Night back in 1967, was found dead at his Los Angeles home on Monday (February 2). His death comes after decades of living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in addition to battling heart failure in his final months.

After his passing, a statement from his publicist revealed the musician died peacefully at his home in Studio City, surrounded by his loved ones. No cause of death has yet been given.

The American rock band was formed by Negron, Danny Hutton, and Cory Wells. They went on to record material by acts such as Randy Newman, Laura Nyro, and Neil Young, to name a few.

Although they struggled to wow some audiences looking for bands to write their own songs, Three Dog Night had several big hits that took off across the pond. This includes the single Joy To The World (Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog) and One (Is the Loneliest Number).

In an interview with Rock Cellar back in 2018, the musician shared what drew him to such an eclectic range of songs. He explained: "I like different songs for different reasons. I like One because it was our first million-selling record, that one really put us in the game.

"It has a special place in my heart for other reasons too, it was done in one take, and at the time I was in awe of what came out of me, I couldn't believe I'd done that. I love Joy to the World because it became a signature song for us, and it's still a hit to this day."

The band's debut album went platinum, with their following seven releases going on to become gold on the US charts. But it hasn't always been plain sailing for the rock group. They disbanded from 1976 to 1981 before reuniting in 1985.

But they suffered another falling out following Negron's battle with addiction at the time. In 1991, Negron checked into rehab to seek support for his ongoing issues. He recalled to Rock Cellar: "I wanted to cry help, and they took a spiritually and physically broken man, and they changed me with many tools and an unbelievable support group."

Meanwhile, Huttons and Wells continued to perform together as Three Dog Nights until Wells died in 2015. Despite his passing, Hutton still tours today as the sole remaining member of the band.

An obituary provided to Variety stated that while Negron and Hutton had been estranged for decades, the pair met for the first time in years last year in what was described as "a timely effort to exchange apologies and bury the hatchet."
