Many Brits love a cup of tea or coffee in the morning or the moment they check into a hotel, and will quickly fill the water up and boil it so they can rest their weary feet after travelling.
However, in a recent episode of ITV's This Morning, Alison Hammond shared that you may want to think twice before doing this.
“Have you ever used the hotel kettle? You won’t want to again after this…,” This Morning captioned their video, followed by a vomiting emoji.
The TV star explained: “A new report has revealed that guests in five-star hotels have been known to clean their dirty underwear and socks in a kettle”.
She looked visibly horrified, as she continued: “I know, this sounds disgusting, but it’s absolutely true, and I’m sorry”.
People couldn’t believe it, acknowledging that boiling water is effective for killing germs, but the experts were concerned that when people were using the kettle for cleaning socks and underwear, they weren’t bringing it to a full boil.
This then means that germs are left in the kettle, unbeknownst to the next person who comes to use it.
Alison even pointed out that if you rinse the kettle out, it might not be enough to remove the germs.
“It’s such a weird story,” Dermot O’Leary added, after looking mortified, wondering why people would choose to wash their smalls in the kettle.
Alison read: “This housekeeper who cleans luxury suites in Manchester, she said ‘You’d be surprised at how many treat the kettle like a general purpose pot because they don’t want to use the sink’.”
Shecontinued: “She also added, ‘Unless there’s a complaint, kettles are usually just wiped on the outside, and left in place’.”
In the comments, many were mortified. One person wrote: “Hotels are grim. The idea of sleeping in a bed others slept on, not knowing how clean the sheets, toilet, bathtub, floor is, etc. I always bring my own cleaning spray, towel and pillowcase”.
Someone recommended that people use a “foldable travel kettle” so they can be in control of how clean their appliance is.
A woman claimed: “This makes sense to me now! The last time I had a tea in the hotel room at the airport was the worst tasting thing I have ever had”.
“New fear unlocked,” somebody seethed, saying that they were going to spend a fortune on getting tea and coffee out.
