The property on Cromwell Street in Gloucester, once the scene of a horrific campaign of terror and multiple murders, was 'totally obliterated' following exposure and now exists only as a pathway into St Michael's Square.

Residents suggest that the legacy of these events still looms over Gloucester, with fresh information continuing to emerge, adding pieces to the 'jigsaw'.

There are lingering suspicions within the community that individuals potentially connected to the historic crimes might still be freely roaming in the city.

Following the premiere of Netflix's 'Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story', a local, who opted to remain anonymous, said: "The place has been shrouded in rumour and over times rumours have only intensified."

They observed that even after a significant lapse of time, individuals continue to come forward discreetly: "As time goes on people slowly still come forward - although people don't want to be named publicly or commit views, thought and experiences to camera - people are talking.

"Things are slowly being pieced together - but it feels like the Cromwell Street case is like a large jigsaw puzzle and it feels like a lot of the pieces have been deliberately destroyed.

"The other pieces as much as possible are scattered so widely the odds of piecing them back together in any meaningful way are slim."

Fred West was charged with a dozen murders but committed suicide in prison in 1995 at the age of 53, before facing trial. His wife, Rose West, was found guilty of ten murders in November 1995 and is currently serving a life sentence.

Locals have said that the recent documentary has reignited interest in the case, which they welcome, yet they believe there's more to the story that remains untold.

One resident remarked: "It does feel like that, that there is some guiding hand - right down to how they demolished 25 Cromwell Street.

"Every single brick of that building was crushed - absolutely obliterated.

"I can see why they did it to stop trophy hunters and stuff but as time goes on it does seem and feel like there were other motives for whitewashing everything to such an extreme degree.

"It is an odd one - but feels like that is the case."

The local added: "You then have to question what the other motives are - it's been well known there is some evidence to suggest that Fred was not operating on his own and could have been part of a trafficking ring that involved other people. Some of these may be additional accomplices.

"Some of these people may still walk free and be among our city to this day. People genuinely feel that."

The local spoke of a reluctance within the community to bring such sensitive information into the public eye: "There is several aspects but local people are reluctant to come forward with this kind of information in the public arena.

"No one wants to commit to stuff to camera. One of the main reasons is not just that it is a controversial thing to talk about - but people are concerned about their safety should they do so.

"It is a blight on the memory and reputation of the city - but it should not go away - and it shouldn't be forgotten especially whilst there are still girls out there who are lost and need to be reunited wih their families.

"There are families who continue to lose sleep over this - and wonder what happened and what will be done.

"It is one of those evolving things. As time goes on bits and pieces slowly coming out but I don't think we'll ever get the full picture."
