A video recording shot by a Russian soldier captures the terrifying moment his unit were struck by a barrage of HIMARS rockets as they tried to cross a bridge. The soldiers appear to be attempting to recover equipment from their stranded vehicles on a badly damaged bridge near Zvannoe in the Kursk region.
They clearly sensed they were in danger, with one soldier shouting: "Let’s take it and get the f**k out of here." No sooner had he uttered the words, than the screeching noise of incoming missiles can be distinctly heard. The bridge is rocked by a series of powerful explosions with balls of flames erupting everywhere.
Images show the Russian soldiers desperately trying to run to safety as mayhem breaks out all around them.
Zvannoe is located just 24 kilometres from the village of Tetkino in Russia's Kursk region.
Ukrainian forces have stepped up their attacks in the area over the last few days, as they target Russian supply lines - according to Forbes David Axe.
The bridge over the Seym River came under attack earlier in May, sustaining serious damage.
However, soldiers could still cross it on foot, resulting in the follow up strike that was captured on video.
"Ukrainian forces try to isolate enemy units near Tetkino and throughout the Glushkovo district of Kursk Oblast," the Ukrainian Center for Defense Strategies explained on May 6.
Ukrainian forces are trying to regain the initiative along the border, after being pushed back from Kursk.
As part of their manoeuvres, they are attempting to cut off the flow of supplies to Russian troops defending Tyotkino from Ukrainian raids.
The Ukrainians are trying to implement the harsh lessons they learned from their Kursk retreat.
One of the reasons the salient collapsed was because their units never properly cut off Russian supply lines across the Seym River to the north.
Ukrainian artillery and bombs struck several bridges, but the Russians repaired them —or erected temporary pontoon bridges.
