Traffic was brought to a standstill as flames erupted from a car on the M60 near Bury.
Photographs reveal a black car ablaze on the clockwise M60 between junctions 16 and 17 at approximately 9.50pm on Wednesday night (May 15).
Smoke was also visible billowing from the vehicle, with several other cars having stopped nearby.
National Highways halted traffic whilst emergency services attended the incident, located close to Prestwich and Whitefield.
The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that two fire engines from Whitefield and Agecroft stations were dispatched, reports Manchester Evening News.
A single hose reel jet was utilised to extinguish the flames before the scene was handed over to National Highways.
Crews remained on site for roughly 20 minutes, according to the fire service.
National Highways reported that traffic was temporarily stopped on the M60 between junctions 16 and 17 following the outbreak of the fire.
One lane had reopened by 10.23pm, while motorists faced three-mile tailbacks which took half an hour to clear.
All lanes of traffic were reopened by 12.30am this morning (Thursday).
