Queues are building on the UK's longest road after a horror crash forced the northbound carriageway to close. Emergency services are at the scene on the A1 in Northumberland after a crash involving just one vehicle happened between Alnwick and Northgate. It is not yet known whether there have been any serious injuries as a result of the incident.
A post on the National Highways website reads: "The A1 in Northumberland is closed northbound between the A697 (Northgate) and the A1068 (Alnwick) due to a single vehicle collision. Northumbria Police are on scene." The A1 is the UK's longest road running on for 410 miles from central London to the centre of Edinburgh.
A diversion route is in place. The Daily Express has contacted Northumbria Police for more information.
