US President Donald Trump is set to receive a very generous gift from the Qatari Royal Family. As reported by The Independent, members of the Al Thani family are set to gift the US a Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet, valued at around £304 million ($400 million).

The plane will serve as the new Air Force One until the end of Trump's term. It will then be transferred to his presidential library. The gift has raised some legal questions regarding the Constitution's emoluments clause, however The Justice Department insists the gift is legal.

They have argued that it's not bribery because it's given to the Air Force, not Trump personally, and isn't tied to any official act.

As reported by The Independent, the plane will be modified to meet U.S. military specifications before Trump can use it.

This could include radiation shielding, a variety of communications systems, and anti-missile technology, although the full set of modifications are yet to be known.

The plane is believed to be among one of the most valuable gifts ever given to the US by a foreign government.

Ali Al-Ansari, Qatar’s Media Attaché to the US, told Politico that the deal had yet to be finalised.

Al-Ansari said: “The possible transfer of an aircraft for temporary use as Air Force One is currently under consideration between Qatar’s Ministry of Defense and the U.S. Department of Defense, but the matter remains under review by the respective legal departments, and no decision has been made.”
