Royal fans were delighted with the appearance of the Prince and Princess of Wales at yesterday evening's celebration to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day - but were not overjoyed at seeing William sat next to Sir Keir Starmer. Thursday, May 8 marked 80 years since Germany officially surrendered to the Allied powers, marking the end of the Second World War in Europe
Second World War veterans joined members of the Royal Family and prime minister at Westminster Abbey yesterday. Taking to X, royal fans issued the same complaint - they were forced to see the Labour party leader every time William, 42, was shown on their TV screens.
One fan commented: "See Prince William drew the short straw having to sit by Starmer."
Another fan commented: "Gorgeous, so delightful. How lucky are we to have our wonderful Royal Family.
"Why on earth is Starmer sitting right next to Prince William? He detests old people & the monarchy. It’s ruined my night."
A third wrote: "Was looking forward to the #VEDay80 show on BBC but with #TwoTierKeir Starmer in every camera shot of Prince William now I can’t stand it. Why is he sat there, should be a veteran!!!!!", followed by a red angry face.
As well as Kate and William, the King and Queen Camilla were also joined by the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence at the service held earlier in the day.
The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and the Duke of Kent were also present on Thursday afternoon.
Later in the evening, the Prince and Princess of Wales's appearance came as a surprise at the VE Day concert. The couple were not joined by their three children - Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7.
The King also made an appearance on Thursday evening, with the 76-year-old also providing a speech to mark the historic occasion.
