Donald Trump has suggested he won't seek a third term in the White House but his Make America Great Again movement will flourish after his four years end. Mr Trump has repeatedly suggested he could seek a third term even though the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution says "no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice".

He told NBC there is considerable support for him to run again, adding: "But this is not something I’m looking to do. I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody, ideally a great Republican, a great Republican to carry it forward." In his previous comments about a third term, Mr Trump sometimes appeared keener to provoke outrage on the left of US politics than to suggest he was serious. The Trump Organisation has been selling red caps with the words "Trump 2028" emblazoned across them.

But at moments, he has suggested he was looking into a third term. In an interview with NBC in March, Mr Trump said, "I’m not joking. There are methods which you could do it."

He told the same broadcaster on Sunday (May 4) that it was far too early to begin discussing a potential successor.

Mr Trump said his "brilliant" Vice President JD Vance was doing a "fantastic job". Secretary of State Marco Rubio is "great", according to the president.

The US leader said: "You look at Marco, you look at JD Vance, who’s fantastic. You look at — I could name 10, 15, 20 people right now just sitting here. No, I think we have a tremendous party. And you know what I can’t name? I can’t name one Democrat."

Meanwhile, Mr Trump said he is not considering replacing his Defence Secretary, Pete Hegseth, whose job he added was "totally safe".

This is despite his being under fire for his role in chats in the Signal messaging app in which sensitive information about military planning was shared.

The president also said his decision to nominate national security adviser Mike Waltz to be the US ambassador to the United Nations was not punishment for starting the Signal chat chain to which Mr Waltz inadvertently added a journalist.

Mr Trump said: "No. I just think he’ll do a nice job in the new position." He added his decision to have Mr Rubio take over Mr Waltz's duties would likely be temporary. The president said: "Marco’s very busy doing other things so he’s not going to keep it long term."

In the wide-ranging interview, Mr Trump also said it was "highly unlikely" the US would need to use force to make Canada the country's 51st state.

He offered less certainty about whether his repeated calls for the US to take over Greenland from NATO-ally Denmark can be achieved without military action.

Mr Trump said: "Something could happen with Greenland. I’ll be honest, we need that for national and international security... I don’t see it with Canada. I just don’t see it, I have to be honest with you."
