When visiting Devon, tourists may typically flock to the county's stunning beaches or other tourist hotspots, with some 'hidden gems' remaining relatively unknown, except to those already in the know. One place that you may have missed on holidays to Devon is Cockington Court and Country Park.

Just 15 minutes from the popular seaside resort of Torquay, Cockington Court offers a beautiful break from the more crowded parts of Devon. Within this large country park is Cockington Court, a Grade II listed Manor House originally built in the 16th century on the site of a former medieval court, which is believed to have dated back to 1066. Today, tourists can enjoy visiting both the manor house and the stunning park surrounding it.

This park is a paradise for nature lovers, with open parkland, rural countryside and substantial woodland, alongside three ornamental lakes and a Tudor rose garden.

Alongside the historical manor house and its stunning park, Cockington is also home to its own craft studio, where you can purchase beautiful items created by its on-site makers — perfect for decorating your own home or for gifts for your friends and family.

Visitors to Cockington have included the iconic crime writer Agatha Christie, who regularly visited the estate during her youth. She even dedicated her book, Why Didn't They Ask Evans?, to Christopher Mallock, of the Mallock family, who staged amateur theatricals at Cockington Court.

Visitors to Cockington have left rave reviews on TripAdvisor, with one writing: "This was a delightful park to spend an afternoon. Gardens are beautiful, nice walking trails through the woods and alongside a stream, or just around the property lawns.

"The shops and church are quaint and interesting, and there are a couple of nice inside cafes. Lovely walk to it from our guesthouse, and then back down through the woods to the seafront. And FREE admission. We really enjoyed it, highly recommend visiting."

Another added, "Beautiful country park with lakes and walks to wander. The village of picture-perfect thatched houses was a pleasure to walk around. There are great little shops and cafes in the village.

"The cafe within Cockington Court served up a delicious scone with generous portions of jam and cream, and the teas and coffee were excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed looking at all the crafts and workshops, everyone was so friendly, we came home with beautiful glassware and gin."

While a third penned: "Went out on a last minute date to Cockington. Was really pretty with the sun out, especially enjoyed the ponds which came with an abundance of bright blue dragonflies.

"The flora on the walks is almost prehistoric in nature and is lovely when you get to a quiet part. The giant rhubarb stands out, and it's surprising to see a plant like this growing happily in the UK. The rose garden was also in full bloom and is highly recommended, as the scent on the summer breeze is enticing.
