Meghan Markle has been accused of "flouting" her HRH title for her "personal gain", according to royal sources. The Duchess of Sussex found herself in the centre of a media storm this week after one of her pals shared an image of one of her gifts from last year, which featured a card reading: "With Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex".
The move sparked backlash, as despite the Sussexes still retaining their HRH titles after quitting the Royal Family in 2020, they have not used them publicly since then, in what was an agreement with the royals following their bombshell exit. Now sources claimed the Sussexes use their royal titles in their every day lives with a report by Page Six saying that they even have them "emblazoned on their stationery".
A royal source told the outlet: "Meghan hates the royal family and UK, yet flouts [the HRH] for her personal gain. It’s appalling. Everything about her is a contradiction.
"[She] embraced the [royal] platform and hierarchy, but it just doesn’t translate in the US. It’s weird to refer to your team as ‘private office’ and ask them to call you Sir and Ma’am. Heaven forbid she just asks people to call her ‘Meghan.'"
The palace source dubbed the latest incident involving Meghan's use of her HRH title "disgraceful" and "shocking," saying: "[They] were asked not to use the titles for this very kind of issue".
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been contacted for comment. On Monday, the Duchess's representatives denied that the couple used their HRH titles.
But a source for the couple said on Tuesday that the Sussexes did not use HRH publicly but retained the style, and did not use it for commercial purposes.
The source described the basket as a "personal gift," saying: "While they do not publicly use 'HRH,' this was a personal gift, and their titles remain."
In January 2020, the late Queen issued a statement after Harry and Meghan announced they wanted to step down as senior royals, saying that "together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family".
Buckingham Palace said in a statement at the time: "The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the royal family."
Meanwhile, in a statement published on Harry and Meghan's former Sussex website about their transition to non-working royals, it read: "As agreed and set out in January, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will retain their 'HRH' prefix, thereby formally remaining known as His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex and Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex.
"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will no longer actively use their HRH titles as they will no longer be working members of the family as of Spring 2020."
Buckingham Palace has declined to comment.
