Katy Perry has been left feeling "battered and bruised" after participating in Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin mission, which saw an all-female group head into space for approximately 11 minutes. The I Kissed A Girl singer was joined by Bezos's fiancée Lauren Sánchez and CBS presenter Gayle King for the trip, where seats cost regular passengers up to $28 million for a seat.
The launch saw Katy, in particular, face significant criticism online for taking part in such a fleeting and expensive trip during an economic struggle. The 40-year-old songstress took part in the journey after her latest album Woman's World was poorly received, including the lead song, which had what some said had a "regressive" attitude towards feminism.
However, the singer still has extremely loyal fans, as a Brazilian Instagram account clubbed together to pay for a digital billboard message in New York's Times Square for 24 hours. It read: "Congratulations on the opening week of the tour. We are so proud of you and your magical journey. And we love you to the moon and back! Know that you are safe, seen and celebrated. We'll see you around the world, this is just the beginning!"
The page's users told Katy they did it to "remind her that she is never alone; our love for her is boundless, unwavering, and eternal.
In response, Katy left a comment sharing her gratitude after dealing with negative comments online. She replied: "I love you guys, have grown up together with you, and am so excited to see you all over the world this year! Please know I am OK. I have done much work around knowing who I am, what is real, and what is important to me."
She said she is "not perfect", but rather on a "human journey playing the game of life with an audience of many and sometimes I fall".
"But I get back up and go on and continue to play the game and somehow through my battered and bruised adventure, I keep looking to the light and in that light a new level unlocks."
She added, "When the 'online' world tries to make me a human Piñata, I take it with grace and send them love, because I know so many people are hurting in so many ways, and the internet is very much a dumping ground for the unhinged and unhealed."
The singer is currently on her The Lifetimes tour and struggles to sell tickets for her US dates, which kick off in Houston, Texas. She launched the tour on Wednesday in Mexico City and was slammed for her 'mum moves,' with fans accusing her of 'giving lazy town.'
