Brits are in desperate need of a holiday to recover from the stress of planning their dream getaway, new research reveals. A whopping 40% of adults say that the week leading up to their departure is the most stressful time of the year.

Despite eagerly anticipating a sunny break all year round, a staggering 66% find themselves swamped with tasks in the run-up to their holiday. For 31%, this overload of responsibilities dampens their excitement as they have too much on their plate.

The survey of 2,000 adults revealed that packing bags (29%), cleaning the house (13%), and organising necessary documents (10%) are the top pre-holiday stressors.

Over half (52%) of those polled admitted they can only truly unwind once they're en route to the airport. However, a significant 16% have even opted out of a holiday altogether due to the overwhelming amount of preparation required.

Much of this meticulous planning is aimed at preventing mishaps such as coming home to wilted plants because no one watered them (9%) or being hit with exorbitant last-minute fees for trains and taxis to the airport (9%).

In an effort to alleviate this stress, National Express has partnered with travel blogger Vicky Flip Flop to provide some 'getaway hacks' for a more relaxed countdown to your holiday.

Vicky Flip Flop, whose real name is Vicky Philpott from Southsea, recommends adopting a calming routine before your journey. This could include a brief stretching session, a cup of herbal tea, or lighting a soothing candle.

She explained: "Many people find themselves juggling a long to-do list, from planning travel and wrapping up work to getting the house clean for their return. The pressure to create a perfect holiday experience can sometimes overshadow the excitement, leaving people feeling overwhelmed rather than eager."

Ed Rickard, network director for National Express,commented: "Whether it's packing the right items, organising travel documents, or making sure all necessary reservations are in place, there's always that nagging worry that something will go wrong when travelling on holiday - this can be especially stressful for those travelling with children or large groups."

National Express has seen bookings for Easter travel to major UK airports rise by 11.5 % compared to the same time last year. Ed added: "With hundreds of frequent coach services to and from major UK airports, holidaymakers have one less thing to worry about, with our brilliant coach drivers taking them right to the airport terminal door."
