Mishal Husain had enjoyed an 11-year stint on the Radio 4 Today show and over a quarter of a century at the BBC - but just months after announcing her departure, she's issued a warning about "personality-driven" presenters. The 52-year-old, who'd starred alongside Amol Rajan and Emma Barnett, revealed in a new interview that her technique is to see herself as part of a team, rather than a star.

Blasting "bombastic" hosts, she told British Vogue: "I would very rarely use the word ‘I’, actually, on air. I would quite often say: ‘We’ve talked to so and so', because you’re always part of a team. From the booking of guests, the deciding to go down a certain route, the writing of a brief – broadcasting is a team effort."

She added: "Personality-focused journalism doesn’t have to be bombastic. It doesn’t have to be about the presenters centring themselves.

"Hopefully, if they’re a personality with journalistic integrity, journalistic values, then they can be a conduit to the news for people.”

Emma Barnett was the latest journalist to join the Today show, in 2024, and within months, Mishal had announced her departure.

She had originally intended to switch roles and replace Andrew Marr as the lead presenter on the Sunday morning politics slot, but lost out to Laura Kuenssberg.

However, she stoically declared that everything happens "for a reason" and that she hadn't felt "entitled" to any particular BBC role.

Mishal is now moving on to new projects, including her book Broken Threads: From Empire To Independence, a nostalgic story about her Pakistani grandparents against a politically tense backdrop.

It has already achieved Sunday Times Top 10 Bestseller status, while the paperback version is released on May 8.

Meanwhile, Mishal has switched from the BBC to Bloomsberg and says she has a new vision for the "journalism of tomorrow".
