The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel guidance for Spain after heavy rainfall led to flooding across some popular holiday hotspots. Homes and vehicles on the island of Lanzarote have been deluged after the severe weather event, with some holidaymakers having had trips or flights cancelled.

One disappointed UK tourist told the Express on Monday that their holiday had been cancelled while they were at the airport. Canary Island officials declared an official state of emergency on Saturday, April 12, with images showing deserted streets and abandoned cars.

The FCDO provides regular updates about any of some 226 overseas nations and territories. Its latest alert for Spain, issued on Monday afternoon, reads: "Heavy rainfall and flooding in Lanzarote occurred over the weekend.

"Journeys may be affected. If you are in Lanzarote or travelling to Lanzarote, follow the advice of the local authorities and monitor local weather updates."

The government's foreign affairs department said on Sunday that it was mainly Costa Teguise, San Bartolome and Arrecife that were impacted, adding that some hotels were without power, and some roads were mud-logged.

This earlier update read: "Heavy rainfall and flooding in Lanzarote occurred earlier today (13 April 2025) with Costa Teguise, San Bartolome, and Arrecife particularly affected. Services across the island are affected. Some hotels are currently without power. Some roads are currently affected by mud."
