If you’re hoping to get a better hotel room, these easy tips could sway the odds in your favour. Does simply asking for a free upgrade ever work, and if so, what’s the best way to phrase the request? Julia Krebs, expert hotelier, has shared her insight on how you can up your chances of getting an upgrade.

Being polite and personable is essential, with a warm smile and friendly tone you can make a difference. Mentioning special occasions like anniversaries or birthdays can serve as a great icebreaker. 

When phrasing your request, try saying: “Do you have any complimentary upgrades available today?” but make sure to use a casual tone that is not demanding, showing respect for the hotel's policies while still expressing your interest, Julia suggests.

Maybe the receptionist can offer you a lower upgrade fee or could let you move to a nicer room after your first or second night for the rest of your stay.  

Sometimes it also depends on the time of the day, checking in around 6pm might increase your chances. Unsold or cancelled rooms are more likely to be upgraded at this time. If you are traveling alone or as a couple, you may be luckier compared to a family of six people with three rooms. 

Being thoughtful and considerate can leave a lasting impression. Small gestures like thanking staff for trying can build a positive relationship, potentially leading to more perks during the stay should an upgrade not be possible. 

Loyalty status plays a significant role in whether you’ll get an upgrade - members of hotel loyalty programs often receive priority for complimentary upgrades. This strategy aims to reward and retain valuable repeat customers.

Occupancy levels are another factor - during periods of low occupancy, hotels are more likely to offer complimentary upgrades. 

High occupancy periods may limit the availability of such upgrades and some hotels even blackout dates such as Christmas and New Year's for any free upgrades. 

When it comes to the day of the week, midweek stays are generally less busy than weekends, for example, in resort properties. 

By keeping these simple tips in mind, you could end up getting a complimentary upgrade as part of your trip.
