An unassuming bakery nestled an industrial estate is making people get up early to sample its products - which regularly sell out. Petit Four Patisserie in Cardiff has created quite the buzz with its baked goods since it opened. Some fans are even rising at dawn to get a taste of their offerings.

Tucked away in the city's Freemans Parc industrial estate, the bakery might not stand out at first glance, but it's become a hot topic among locals. The man behind the magic is Michael Coggan, an award-winning baker who took home the title in the Great British Bake Off: The Professionals in 2021. Bethany Gavaghan from Wales Online decided to experience the patisserie for herself, waking up at 6am for the visit. She described how upon entering the shop, one is "instantly hit" with the buttery aroma of fresh pastry.

The humble cash register area displays a tempting selection of treats like croissants, pain au chocolats, and cinnamon buns, while the open-plan kitchen offers a glimpse into the culinary wizardry happening backstage.

The bakery boasts a dazzling assortment of golden, flaky pastries that are simply too good to resist and despite the absence of seating, the atmosphere remains relaxed and welcoming, she said.

Upon arrival, Bethany was greeted with a warm "good morning" by a staff member, who suggested she enjoy a coffee while deciding on her order. She chose a vanilla latte, describing it as "smooth and creamy", making it the perfect companion to a pastry.

She and her friend took their baked goods back to the car, as Petit Flour doesn't offer seating, before taking them home and plating them up to allowi them to fully enjoy their treats.

Describing the food, she said: "I went for a pain au chocolat, while my friend chose a cinnamon bun. Both were exceptional. The pain au chocolat was everything you want it to be and was fresh, buttery, and generously filled with rich, velvety chocolate.

"It was crisp on the outside but not so flaky that it left you covered in crumbs, making it easy to eat without creating a mess.

"My friend also added that her cinnamon bun was perfectly spiced with just the right amount of sweetness. Before leaving, I couldn't help but eye up the afternoon tea offering, which looked seriously indulgent.

"I also spotted their macarons, which I've heard rave reviews about. I didn't try them this time, but they're firmly on my list for next time.

"Petit Four is one of those places that's quietly brilliant - no frills, no gimmicks, but with exceptional quality. It's well worth the early start."
